About

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed indie Metroidvania game Hollow Knight. After its development was first announced in February 2019, there have been very few announcements regarding the title. This has led to a repeating pattern of Hollow Knight fans getting excited before every Nintendo Direct only to be disappointed when the Direct inevitably lacks news on Silksong. This trend has led to a slew of memes regarding Silksong prior to every Nintendo Direct.

History

During Hollow Knight's Kickstarter campaign, one of the stretch goals was a DLC addition where the player could play as the character Hornet in her own side story. On February 11th, 2019, Team Cherry announced via Twitter a showcase of Hornet's new adventure. A few days later, on February 15th, Team Cherry unveiled a trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong, officially declared by the devs themselves as a new game developed by Team Cherry, with Hornet as the main character of the story.

The game is intended to be released for Windows PC, Mac and Linux, and the Nintendo Switch will receive the game at its launch. A demo of the game appeared at E3 2019.

Online Presence

In the three years since the game's announcement, very little information has come out about Silksong. The game's long delay, possibly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, led to unrest from fans. This became particularly evident ahead of Nintendo Directs, particularly Directs showcasing indie games, as fans expressed their hope that the upcoming Directs would contain news about Silksong, only to be inevitably disappointed.

Posts from fans hoping for updates on Silksong stretch back to 2019, the year it was announced. For example, on December 9th, 2019, Twitter user @MetroidMike64[1] posted that they were hoping the following day's Nintendo Indie Showcase Direct would have a release date for Silksong (shown below, left). On August 17th, 2020, user @mossbag69[2] posted a clown referencing fans getting excited about potential Silksong news in the following day's Direct, gaining over 420 retweets and 3,100 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Such posts continued throughout the following two years. The 2022 indie game Haiku the Robot features an Easter Egg referencing Silksong's long delay, which was discovered by Redditor blackknight78900 and posted to /r/gaming[3] on April 29th, 2022 (shown below).

Ahead of yet another indie showcase Nintendo Direct on May 11th, 2022, optimism for Silksong news was once again high, and multiple gaming publications wrote articles about Silksong, including Gamerant[4] and Cultured Vultures.[5]

The game has a dedicated subreddit that launched on August 9th, 2021, and gained over 4,300 subscribers in less than a year.[6]
