About
Hi-Fi Rush is a video game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was notable for its surprise release on Steam in January 2023 with no marketing beforehand, after which it quickly became a hot topic thanks to word of mouth and largely favorable reviews. References to the game also appeared in memes and fan art around the same timeframe.
History
Hi-Fi Rush was directed by John Johanas and released on January 25th, 2023, the same day it was announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct.[1]
The game follows Chai, a human with a surgically grafted music player and robot arm. Throughout the game, Chai battles opponents by pressing attacks in time to the soundtrack.
Reception
The game was predominantly well-received among critics. As of January 30th, 2023, the game has an 88/100 rating on Metacritic.[2] Some critics notably said it could be a contender for "Game of the Year," and the blend of rhythm and action game mechanics drew favorable comparisons to Jet Set Radio and Bayonetta.
Online Presence
The game was largely received positively online, as players posted clips and memes celebrating the game's quality post-release in late January 2023. Kotaku writer Luke Plunkett[3] tweeted it may be a "perfect video game," gaining over 70 retweets and 1,900 likes in three days (shown below, left). Twitter user @alex_moukala[4] recommended it because it shows what can happen "when game devs and studios truly dare to be original and creative," gaining over 500 retweets and 5,300 likes (shown below, right).
In memes, the game was favorably compared to Forspoken, a recently released game that proved divisive thanks to its dialogue (examples shown below).
