Grimcutty is a 2022 horror movie about a creepypasta-like meme monster called the "Grimcutty" that is brought to life by the hysteria of the protagonist's parents. The trailer for the movie was released in mid-September 2022, and the movie released on Hulu on October 10th, 2022. The concept of the film is similar to memes that revolve around urban legends like the Momo Challenge and Slender Man.

History

On September 14th, 2022, Hulu released the trailer for the upcoming horror movie Grimcutty on YouTube,^[1] garnering over 44,000 views in two days (shown below). The trailer depicts a town ravaged by paranoia after an internet meme known as the Grimcutty starts going around that tells people who interact with it to kill people, resulting in a child stabbing his mother to death. The second half of the trailer shows the Grimcutty, a gray creature with a large mouth and eyes, coming to life to try and kill the protagonist.

Directed and written by John William Ross (The Birch), Grimcutty follows a suburban teen girl (newcomer Sara Wolfkind) and her little brother (Callan Farris) who must stop a terrifying internet meme brought to life by the hysteria of their parents, played by Usman Ally (VEEP, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Shannyn Sossamon (Wayward Pines, Sleepy Hollow). Alona Tal (SEAL Team) also stars, as a mother whose son (Kayden Koshalev) is affected by the memetic monster.

Online Presence

The trailer spread online over the following days after the trailer's release. On September 14th, 2022, the AV Club,^[2] Slash Film,^[3] Uproxx^[4] and Bloody Disgusting^[5] reported on it. Several of these publications also shared a poster for the movie with the tagline "feed the frenzy" (shown below).

Reception

Grimcutty garnered mostly negative reviews following its release, with an average score of 1.7/5 stars on Letterboxd,^[6] 4.4/10 stars on IMDb^[7] and a 40% rotten user score on Rotten Tomatoes^[8] as of October 2022. On October 12th, 2022, Mashable^[9] gave the film a negative review, writing:

If the movie trusted its audience more in collecting the thematic goods, there could be space to discover even deeper horrors within the depths of online culture. Instead, the spoon-feeding approach kills the thrills and the fun.

Two days earlier on October 10th, YouTuber Lost In the Reel posted a negative review of the film, calling it "one of the lamest films of the year," garnering over 2,500 views in two days (shown below).
