About

Granny Games refers to the Granny series of mobile and PC survival horror video games created by developers DVloper and Dennis Vukanovic in 2017. The original game Granny, released in 2017, has spawned a number of sequels and spinoffs, as well as mods and fan games. It has also gained favor with memers, largely due to the appearance and nature of the antagonistic Granny character and the setting "Granny's house," with many of the game's mods referencing popular memes.

History

Granny

Granny plays similarly to survival horror games like Slender: The Eight Pages and Amnesia in which the player must escape a monster named Granny's house in five days by sneaking and hiding in various places and collecting items needed to progress. If the player is too loud Granny will chase after them. Notably, Granny holds a bloody baseball bat as a weapon.

On November 24th, 2017, the DVloper YouTube[1] channel published the trailer for their new game Granny, a survival horror video game for iOS and Android (shown below). It garnered over 136 million views in three years.

The game became considerably popular on mobile devices, holding a 4.4/5 star rating on the App Store[2] as of June 2021 with over 74,000 ratings. Over the course of the next year, numerous playthroughs and commentary videos about the game were uploaded to YouTube,[5][6] many going viral (examples shown below, left and right).

Granny was released on Steam[3] on November 20th, 2018. On December 28th, YouTuber[4] Markiplier uploaded a video playing Granny, garnering over 12 million views in roughly three years (shown below).

Granny: Chapter 2

Granny: Chapter 2 was released for Android devices on September 6th, 2019, and iOS on September 7th. The game is played similarly to its prequel but includes a second antagonist named Grandpa. A trailer was released to YouTube on September 7th, garnering over 3.4 million views in two years (shown below).

Granny 2 was also played by a number of large YouTube[7][8] streamers, including Markiplier on January 23rd, 2020 and Thinknoodles on February 27th, garnering over 7.2 and 6.8 million views respectively in a year (shown below, left and right).

Granny 3

In June 2021, Granny 3 was released on the Google Play [9] store, gaining a four-star rating with over 59,000 ratings in two weeks. A trailer was released on June 11th (shown below). The game boasts a new home for players to escape Granny and Grandpa in, as well as an appearance from Slendrina, Granny's granddaughter.

For example, a mod titled "Sponge Granny" was released on the Google Play[11] store in December 2020, which reskins the game to look like the world of SpongeBob Squarepants and replaces Granny's character model with one that resembles SpongeBob (shown below).

New Granny mods are posted to the Play Store[12] frequently, and are usually offered for free (further examples shown below, left and right).

Some of the most popular Granny mods on the Google Play store include:

Granny Memes

The Granny series is frequently the subject of memes by its community. Most of these are video edits and comedic animations depicting various situations in Granny's House. For example, on September 19th, 2020, YouTuber[14] Funny Horror Animation posted a 360-degree video set in Granny's house featuring a number of meme horror characters and mods for the game, garnering over 15 million views in nine months (shown below).

Spinoffs / Spiritual Successors

Slendrina

Slendrina is the earliest game by the DVloper team, released on iOS and Android in November 2013. The game is identical to Slender: The Eight Pages, although features a female version of Slender Man named Slendrina (trailer shown below).

Slendrina would later appear as an Easter Egg in Granny (shown below), and an antagonist in Granny 3, revealed to be Granny's granddaughter throughout the series.

Piggy

Piggy is a series of Roblox games inspired by the gameplay of Granny and using the children's show Peppa Pig as the setting (gameplay shown below). Piggy is an online survival horror game in which one player is Piggy, a creepy version of Peppa Pig holding a baseball bat. The other players must escape before they are killed by Piggy. Piggy is very popular on Roblox, inspiring a number of other horror games on the platform.[13]
