Reception

Netflix Protest

On May 12th, 2019, a petition to cancel Good Omens was published on the website Return To Order.[3] In the original posting, however, the petition called for Netflix to cancel the series, despite it being a part of Amazon Prime's original library.

On June 19th, Twitter [4] user @wdebruinjr posted a screenshot of the petition and corrected the errors, which was originally posted on the fleetof-fandoms Tumblr [5] tagging Neil Gaiman in the caption. The post received more than 2,400 likes and 300 retweets in 24 two days (shown below, left).

Gaiman retweeted[6] the post and wrote, "I love that they are going to write to Netflix to try and get #GoodOmens cancelled. Says it all really." The post received more than 23,000 likes and 4,400 retweets in two days (shown below, center).

On June 20th, 2019, The Guardian[7] reported that more than 20,000 people had signed the petition. Netflix responded to a tweet about the article. They wrote,[8] "ok we promise not to make any more." The post received more than 49,000 likes and 9,600 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, right).

That day, Amazon Prime's Twitter account posted, "Hey @netflix, we'll cancel Stranger Things if you cancel Good Omens." The tweet received more than 66,000 likes and 16,000 retweets in 24 hours (shown below).

Following reports of the mistake, the petition was updated to read:

"Due to an oversight by Return to Order staff, this petition originally listed Netflix as responsible for the offensive series "Good Omens." Amazon Video released the series on May 31. We regret the mistake, and the protests will be delivered to Amazon when the campaign is complete.
