About

Gex refers to a series of video games featuring a wise-cracking, talking anthropomorphic gecko named Gex. Released in the mid-90s, the first game in the series Gex started a trilogy of platform comedic video games similar to Super Mario. The games feature overt parodies and references to other franchises, including Looney Tunes and Star Wars. The other games in the series are Gex: Enter the Gecko and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Gex is also known for the catchphrase "It's tail time."

History

Released in April 1995, Gex debuted on the 3DO game console. It was later released on PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The game received relatively positive reviews. Game Informer magazine, for example, gave the game a 9.25 out of 10.[1]

Gex: Enter the Gecko

The follow-up game, Gex: Enter the Gecko, came out about three years later on January 31st, 1998 in Europe and February 24th in North America. The game was released on several platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo 64, PC and Gameboy Color. The game received positive reviews.[2]

Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko

On March 23rd, 1999, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko was released on the PlayStation in North America.[3] Like the other two games in the series, Gex 3 received moderately positive reviews.

Impact

In the mid-2010s, the game became the subject of interest of online video game players and members. On April 8th, 2012, videogamedunkey published a video entitled "Gex is the Bexst," mocking the number of video game studios responsible for the games. Within nine years, the video received more than 2.7 million views (shown below, left).

Nearly a decade later, on July 5th, 2020, videogamedunkey published another video on the game. The post received more than 2.3 million views in less than one week (shown below, right).
