About

GameScent is an AI-powered gaming device that can generate smells of gunfire, explosions, storms and other in-game events in real time. After the device was announced in February 2024, it became a subject of jokes and memes as users imagined nasty smells the device would generate in various games and engaged in hornyposting.

History

On November 27th, 2023, the gaming hardware company Gamescent announced[1] GameScent, an AI-powered gaming device that is able to generate a select number of smells to reflect in-game situations. The base kit can generate the smells of gunfire, explosions, racing, forest and storm, with "DLC" scents including napalm, sweat, ocean and golf course. The device uses a cartridge system to create scents and is also able to neutralize them afterward.

On February 27th, 2024, several news accounts on X[2][3] / Twitter reported on the product, including viral posts by video game journalist Geoff Keighley and film news account @DiscussingFilm (shown below, left and right).
