About

Five Nights At Freddy's (Movie) refers to the 2023 horror movie produced by Blumhouse that is an onscreen adaptation of the Five Nights At Freddy's game franchise. Though it was announced in early 2015, the movie had significant delays before finally being announced to have a confirmed October 2023 release date.

History

In April 2015 it was first announced that a film based off of the games would be developed, but the film was quickly shuffled into "Development Hell" for several years before Blumhouse productions took over and completed filming in early 2023. Early in the history of the film the biggest piece of news was that Matthew Lillard was signed on to make three movies for the franchise. The TikTok account hearteyesforvanny[1] uploaded a portion of an interview to TikTok on February 3rd, exciting fans by confirming three total movies as well as Shaggy being in the movie (shown below).

Online Presence

After the initial excitement about Matthew Lillard, hype for the movie began to die down. This hype was quickly re-ignited once set photos that were snuck by members of the production team began to make the rounds online. In a similar leak to the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie people were once again excited after seeing photos from the set. On March 4th, 2023, the Twitter[2] account @NeoAyden uploaded a series of photos from the set at night, including a dark look at the front of the titular pizzeria, which accumulated over 50,000 views in two months (shown below).

On May 6th, 2023, the supposed trailer for the movie was leaked by someone who claimed to be doing early test screening reviews of upcoming movies. The trailer, which was recorded on a phone, gave away the general premise of the film while also including a unique serial ID scrawled across the screen, leading to much speculation as to what legal ramifications will come to the leaker as a result. The TikTok[3] account mathiasspyre10 re-uploaded the leaked trailer to TikTok on May 6th, with all copies and snippets being DMCA'd on other platforms, earning over 25,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Red Eyed Animatronics Controversy

The Five Nights at Freddy's Movie Red Eyes Animatronics Controversy or FNAF Red Eyes Controversy refers to online criticism and memes inspired by the appearance of red eyes on the animatronic characters in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie trailer and poster. The trailer was released in May 2023 and quickly inspired backlash on sites including Twitter and Reddit, with some fans posting re-designs of the animatronics to have more game-accurate or scary eyes as opposed to the red, glowing eyes shown in the trailer. It also inspired memes about the situation, including some suggesting the animatronics look like they're high on marijuana.

Official Trailer

On May 16th, 2023, the official Universal Pictures[4] YouTube channel uploaded the trailer for the movie, which opens with a VHS style recording of a commercial for the pizzeria before showing the dilapidated current day building. The trailer was quick to pick up over 7.5 million views in 12 hours, and in the comments fans were quick to pick out easter eggs from the series and comment on designs of the animatronics (shown below).
