About

Fallout: New Vegas is an RPG and the sixth game in the Fallout franchise. The game takes place in the Mojave Wasteland and Las Vegas, Nevada, in the year 2281, 204 years after a nuclear war has destroyed the landscapes, collapsed society and created dangerous mutated animals. The open-world style gameplay is done through the courier, a voiceless protagonist, who was ambushed and left for dead while trying to complete a delivery. The story, characters, bugs, glitches, and exploits of the character are often made into memes decades after the initial release.

History

The first glimpses of the game came in the form of an E3 trailer that was uploaded to YouTube on June 14th, 2010. The trailer[1] received 46,000 likes and 5.6 million views in 11 years (shown below).

Fallout: New Vegas released in North America on October 19th, 2010, and went on to sell an estimated 12 million copies worldwide. The year of release was also when the first of 6 downloadable content packs were released, with Dead Money coming out on December 21st, 2010. This was followed by Honest Hearts on May 17th, 2011, Old World Blues on July 19th, 2011, Lonesome Road on September 20th, 2011, and the item only DLCs, Gun Runners' Arsenal and Courier's Stash released a week later on September 27th, 2011. An official mod to the game called Fallout: The Frontier was released on January 15th, 2021, with the launch trailer[2] receiving 245,000 views and 9,600 likes in three months on YouTube. Online Presence

Being the sixth game in the Fallout franchise, there was already an immense amount of hype online by the time it released. The subreddit /r/fnv/[3] was created on August 3rd, 2010, two months before the release of the game, and currently has 160,000 users after 11 years. This subreddit is where a lot of memes about Fallout: New Vegas come from, such as the post[4] by Redditor Fatso_Pandah, posted on April 3rd, 2020, that received 3,888 upvotes and 50 comments in one year that uses a screenshot from the game to give a commentary on real-life troubles (shown below).

The Game Was Rigged From The Start

The Game Was Rigged From The Start is a phrase said within the game. It has since been used online as a meme to signify something that is rigged or unwinnable. This phrase is said in the opening cutscene, so anyone who played the beginning of the game has heard it, helping it to be recognizable and easy to spread.

We Can't Expect God to Do All the Work

We Can't Expect God to Do All the Work is another meme spawned off of a voice line in Fallout: New Vegas. This comes from the character Joshua Graham, from the Honest Hearts DLC. Much like with the previous catchphrase meme from Benny, this is the first interaction that the player has with this character, leading it to be a powerful first impression.
