Darkest Dungeon is a hardcore dungeon crawler video game, developed by Red Hook Studios^[1], in which the player must manage various groups of heroes, who delve into dungeons filled with monsters and eldritch horrors.

History

On February 10th, 2014, a Kickstarter campaign was launched for the title^[2]. Over a month, the kickstarter had gotten 9,639 backers and raised $313,337. On January 30th, 2015, the game was released on Steam Early Access for early backers, and later on February 3rd, for the rest of the public^[3]. The game was officially released for PC on January 19th, 2016^[4].

Online Presence

After the game's early access release, the game started gaining popularity when it was highlighted by various popular streamers and other content makers on Youtube and Twitch. It was praised for being of excellent quality for at early access game, though noted for having a challenging and unforgiving gameplay.

Classes

Crusader

The crusader is the first class you use during the tutorial and the beginning of the game. He can either be an offensive role in battle because of his striking abilities or a supportive role due to his leverage of powerful defensive buffs and Off-heals.

Highwayman

Alongside with the crusader, the Highwayman has honed his skills with dirk and flintlock to devastating effect. Whether at range or in a melee, he is equally effective at dispatching his foes. Be it a grapeshot area-of-effect, or single target bleed, the Highwayman's skills focus solely on dealing damage in a variety of ways.

Vestal

Recruitable the carriage, The Vestal channels her zeal for battle into healing abilities, holy judgements and dazzling explosions of light. A strong backbone to any party, the Vestal can also hold her own on the front line with a powerful mace bash and close-quarters condemnations.

Plague Doctor

Also recruitable on the carriage, the plague doctor is a doctor, researcher and alchemist who prefers to hang back, eating away at her foes with stacking damage-over-time abilities like toxic clouds & plague-filled grenades. She is equally effective in a support role, blinding and confusing foes while enhancing a party's survival with damage-increasing tonics, and remedies for bleed and blight effects.
