Dandadan, also known as Dan Da Dan, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu that follows the story of Momo, a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult freak. The manga began serialization in Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app and website in April 2021, and steadily grew an online presence and fandom over the years. An anime adaptation produced by Science Saru is expected to premiere in October 2024.
Plot
Dandadan follows the story of Momo Ayase and Okarun, who are on opposite sides of the paranormal spectrum regarding what they believe in and what they won’t accept. Their quest to prove each other wrong leads them down a path of secret crushes and paranormal battles.[1]
History
On April 6th, 2021, Yukinobu Tatsu began the serialization of Dan Da Dan[2] in Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app. The manga's first volume was released on August 4th, 2021. (seen below)
2024 Anime Adaptation
On November 28th, 2023, an anime television series adaptation for Dandadan was announced, produced by Science Saru and directed by Fūga Yamashiro. The series is set to premiere on October 4th, 2024. Crunchyroll[2] uploaded the anime's first trailer on March 22nd, 2024, amassing more than 1.5 million views and 48,000 likes in seven months (seen below).
Online Presence
Dandadan's online presence has steadily grown since the manga started its serialization in April 2021, inspiring many fan arts, memes and jokes related to the source material. For instance, on October 2nd, 2024, X[3] user @mistushisama posted a photoshopped image of Superbad's McLovin character edited to look like Okarun (seen below), which amassed over 15,000 likes and 1,300 reposts in a day.
On August 10th, 2024, TikTok[4] user @deathstorm999 posted a version of the "Why you so quiet? What's on your mind?" meme playing Dandadan's opening theme, "Otonoke" by Creepy Nuts. The post (seen below) amassed more than 741,000 plays and 108,000 likes in two months.
Fandom
On April 18th, 2021, the Dandadan Wiki Fandom[5] page was created, accumulating over 346 pages of materials related to the series. On April 1st, 2021, the /r/Dandadan page was created on Reddit,[6] amassing more than 50,000 members.
