Cooking Mama is a cooking simulation mini video game initially launch for the Nintendo DS in 2006. The game turned into a series with four more titles and two spin-offs on Wii. Cooking Mama: Cookstar is to be released for Nintendo Switch in March 2020. The game allows players to prepare and cook meals according to a variety of set recipes.
History
On March 23rd, 2006, Taito, Majesco Entertainment and 505 Games released Cooking Mama for Nintendo DS.[6] On February 5th, World-of-Longplays uploaded a Cooking Mama longplay video to YouTube (show below, left). The video gained over 603,00 views in seven years. Many YouTubers began testing the recipes in real life. On August 20th, 2017, GameTim uploaded "Soba | Cooking with Cooking Mama!" (show below, right). The video garnered over 5.3 million views and 92,000 likes in three years.
Cookstar
On February 18th, 2020, YouTube account Dante Nintendo Switch World released "Cooking Mama: CookStar – Debut Trailer for Nintendo Switch HD" on YouTube (shown below, left). Cooking Mama: Cookstar is due to be released in March 2020 and it will cost $39.99.[7] That same day, YouTuber Cyber Shaman uploaded the video "EVOLUTION of All Cooking Mama GAMES! ►2006 – 2020 (DS – Nintendo Switch)" (shown below, right).
Reception
In 2008, the animal rights group Peta,[4] launched the Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals game which was created as a statement against the video game advocating for cooking meat (demo shown below). The game creators of Cooking Mama responded by adding more vegetarian recipes to the game.[5] On May 5th, 2009, Majesco announced that the Cooking Mama series has sold more than 4 million units domestically.[3]

Cooking Mama Crypto Mining Rumor refers to disproven allegations that the 2020 game Cooking Mama: Cookstar contains cryptocurrency mining software that deteriorates Nintendo Switch consoles it is installed on. The allegations were spawned by a 4chan's /v/ post and received viral spread on Twitter in early April 2020.
Rainbow Grilled Cheese
On February 18th, Twitter users began reacting to the Cookstar trailer release noting that there was a recipe for a rainbow grilled cheese sandwich. Twitter user @TomZohar[1] tweeted, "Cooking Mama said gay cheese" which received over 220 like ins a day while Twitter user @PrinceOfXianLe[2] tweeted, "cooking mama made a gay sandwich what a time to be alive <3" (shown below, right).
