Amnesia: Rebirth is the 2020 entry in Frictional Games' Amnesia survival horror franchise. After the game's release, it caused a similar stir among Let's Players, as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which was influential in launching the careers of popular Let's Players like Markiplier and PewDiePie.

History

On March 6th, 2020, Frictional Games published a launch trailer for Amnesia: Rebirth, gaining over 342,000 views (shown below, left). The game launched on October 20th, 2020 on Linux, Windows, and Playstation 4 (launch trailer shown below, right).

The game takes place 98 years after the events of The Dark Descent and 38 years after its sequel A Machine for Pigs but is otherwise unrelated to the original game's story.^[1] It maintains several gameplay elements of The Dark Descent, however, including first-person gameplay and an unfolding narrative told mostly through found notes.^[2]

Reception

Amnesia: Rebirth was met with praise from critics, though not to the extent of Dark Descent_. Vice^[2] wrote the game didn't tweak the formula much from the original, with critic Patrick Klepek writing, "_Rebirth is certainly an evolution of a space the studio played in for the past decade, it does not try to be anything more than a new Amnesia game, warts and all. The result is something decidedly old school, embracing its clunkiness and quirks, rather than running from them." Similarly, Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation noted that while the game was scary, the horror game industry had grown from the days of The Dark Descent, and noted some disappointment in how Rebirth felt very similar (shown below).

However, most critics agreed the game was scary and retained the horror factor of The Dark Descent. The game netted an average critical score of 82 on Metacritic.^[3]

Online Presence

The game quickly became hot amongst Let's Players, paricularly those who grew popular playing the original. Markiplier began an LP of the game on October 23rd, 2020, gaining over 2.3 million views on the first episode. PewDiePie also posted a video of himself playing Rebirth and reminiscing on the ten years since Dark Descent helped launch his channel, gaining over 5 million views (shown below, right).
