American Dream: The 21 Savage Story is a movie that covers the story of British-American rapper 21 Savage during the time of his ICE arrest and his eventual release. The movie, which coincides with the release of 21 Savage's album American Dream, is directed by and stars Donald Glover, as well as Caleb McLaughlin of Stranger Things fame, with a release date set for January 12th, 2024.
History
On January 7th, 2024, the Instagram account @TheJohnCanon[1] uploaded the first official photo of the movie poster, showing 21 Savage, Donald Glover and Caleb McLaughlin together while each wearing Savage's face tattoos, creating a lot of buzz on social media with many pointing out how the other actors look compared to Savage (shown below).
The following day, on January 8th, the official YouTube channel for 21 Savage[2] uploaded the first trailer for the film. In the official trailer, the plot of the movie is shown with it being similar to a documentary that goes over his arrest by ICE for his status as not being an American citizen, earning over 838,000 views in one day (shown below).
Online Presence
After the trailer was released, numerous fans of 21 Savage began to respond positively to it, noting their favorite parts from the teaser and about living through the story as it happened. Other fans were quick to note the disparity in age between 21 Savage and Donald Glover, with X user @dj0nes[3] uploading a succinct reaction by using a head-scratching GIF on January 8th, 2024, earning over 16,700 views in one day (shown below).
One part of the trailer received a notable amount of attention on social media, specifically when Donald Glover recreated the iconic meme 21 Savage Supervillain pose, with many people creating side-by-side comparisons between Glover and Savage to show the contrast between their characters.
For example, on January 8th, 2024, the official X account for @Complex[4] uploaded a top-down comparison between the two, with the only caption being the uohhhhhhhhhh! emoji (shown below).
