History

Tokyo was selected to host the Summer 2020 games back on September 7th, 2013, by the International Olympic Committee.[1] After being selected, the city began to make improvements and plan for the influx of athletes and visitors. On September 26th, 2016, with the ending of the 2016 Rio Olympics the prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, appeared on stage dressed as Super Mario to accept the honor of being the next host country. This ceremony was posted to YouTube[2] by the official Olympics channel, where it earned 2.3 million views in five years (shown below).

Online Presence

With the Olympics being in Japan, there has been a lot of online buzz relating to it. Most of the buzz revolves around how the Olympics that were supposed to start in 2020 had to be pushed till 2021. This made a lot of conversation take place surrounding the Olympic Logo because many people thought that the 2020 logo was perfect and wouldn't have a logo that good again.

On July 21st, 2021, Twitter[3] user BilliFitzSimons posted one such example discussing the original 2020 logo being lost due to the pandemic, receiving nearly 1,300 likes and over 60 retweets in two days (shown below).

Anti-Sex Bed Hoax

Anti-Sex Bed Hoax refers to a rumor that athletes' beds at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which are made of cardboard, are supposedly designed to crumble under the weight of two people in order to discourage athletes from having sex. While there are anti-fraternization guidelines at the Tokyo Olympics due to the pandemic, the beds are made of cardboard to support sustainability and can support up to 440 pounds. The rumor that the beds would collapse under the weight of two people as an "anti-sex" measure was disproven by athletes at the games.
