About
Stop! Stop! He's Already Dead! is a quote from The Simpsons that has been used as a reaction image and exploitable image macro to signify when a poster believes a person or party has received too much punishment, pain, insulting, etc. After the meme format emerged in the mid-2010s, it continued to spread online over the following years into the 2020s, also becoming a standalone catchphrase.
Origin
The quote comes from a scene in episode 15, season six of The Simpsons, titled "Homie the Clown," which aired February 12th, 1995.[1] In the scene, Homer, impersonating Krusty the Clown, begins beating up "The Krustyburgler" in front of the children. As the beatdown continues, a child cries "Stop! Stop! He's already dead!" The scene was uploaded to YouTube by Charles M on October 20th, 2015 (shown below).
One of the earliest known uses of the scene as a meme was posted to 9GAG on February 3rd, 2014, using an image from the scene to represent their feelings watching the Seattle Seahawks blow out the Denver Broncos 43-8 during that year's Super Bowl. The post[2] gained 12,000 upvotes in nearly ten years (shown below).
Spread
Through much of the 2010s and into the 2020s, the scene has been a popular way to express when a poster feels a subject is receiving an overload of punishment, insults, or violence. For example, on August 30th, 2019, Redditor Delacruzen posted a Baby Shark joke with the image in /r/dankmemes,[3] gaining over 26,000 points in four years (shown below, left). On August 23rd of the same year, Redditor StonyTark3000 posted an example that gained over 35,000 points in four years /r/memes[4] (shown below, right).
The meme has also been used as an exploitable, with the Homer and the Krustyburglar edited to represent different characters. For example, on December 11th, 2020, Tumblr user joyfulpiefactory[5] made an example using Super Smash Brothers characters, gaining over 800 notes in three years (shown below, left). On June 14th, 2018, an /r/animemes[6] poster made an example featuring Jojo's Bizarre Adventure characters, gaining over 880 points in five years (shown below, right).
