About

Still the Craziest DM I've Received, also written Still the Craziest DM I've Recieved or Still the Craziest DM I've Ever Received, refers to an exploitable screenshot of an Instagram story showing a direct message (DM) reading, "I fw u heavy ❤️." Following the trend, meme creators replace the person who sent it.

Origin

On January 31st, 2023, Instagram[1] user @yummy.swag posted an Instagram story screenshot reading, "Still the craziest dm I've recieved 🙏🏽," in reference to a faked screenshot of an Instagram DM from Bernie Sanders reading, "i fw u heavy ❤️." Over the course of eight months, the post gained roughly 3,800 likes (shown below). Another likely origin is a since-deleted post shared by Instagram[2] user @vuxsal on the same day.

Spread

On February 3rd, 2023, multiple Instagram[3][4][5] pages reposted a cropped version of the meme, gaining viral engagement. Months later, meme creators started to exploit the image, replacing the person who sent the DM.

For instance, the first-known variation was posted by Tumblr[6] user ashstfu on September 5th, 2023, showing Franz Kafka, gaining over 5,300 notes in 17 days (shown below, left). On September 7th, 2023, Instagram[7] user @kornsexual posted a Karl Marx iteration, gaining roughly 17,000 likes in 15 days (shown below, right).

Viral iterations using the format continued to surface on Instagram[8] going into September 2023.
