Steve Lacy's Bad Habit is a viral hit song that premiered in mid-2022 and quickly gained mainstream radio success as well as a wide amount of usage on TikTok in the form of audio sampling. The general vibe of the song has led to a resurgence in sadge posting, as well as the general sadboyhours like similar-themed songs "Lucid Dreams" and "Glimpse of Us".
On June 29th, 2022, Steve Lacy posted the song on his official YouTube[1] channel, premiering ahead of the full album drop later in July. The song was an instant success with a lot of radio play and online spread, with the original upload receiving over 63 million views in eight months (shown below), and lyric videos of it getting over 7 million views in the same timeframe.
A snippet of the song was posted to TikTok in a now-deleted video prior to the song's full release, with one of the first TikToks to use the audio being posted on June 25th, 2022, a full five days before the song's YouTube premiere, by the TikToker @Brooklynhislop[2], who used it as the background to her attempt at a Squishmallow human claw machine at Vidcon, earning over 576,000 likes in eight months (shown below).
The song quickly became prominent for its emotional downbeat and lyrics, with a lot of TikToks being posted by boys who dance or vibe to the song while acting either sad or Rizzed Up, with the highest liked example being posted by the TikToker @damedollatok[3] on October 12th, 2022, earning over 2 million likes in four months (shown below).
