Step 1 or "Step 1" x "Ylang Ylang" Remix Trend refers to a TikTok trend set to a mashup of the songs "Step 1" by SleazyWorld Go and "Ylang Ylang" by FKJ where users lip dub to the title lyric then cut to a viral video or piece of advice over "Ylang Ylang." The trend began in May 2022 and saw increasing popularity over the following months, peaking in August.
Origin
On May 24th, 2022, TikToker[1] @arzinhoo posted a video set to a mashup of the opening of "Step 1" by SleazyWorld Go followed by "Ylang Ylang" by FKJ where the lyric "Step one" plays, then cuts to several clips and images of everyday life under the caption, "treat her right," garnering over 2 million views in three months (shown below).
Spread
The video inspired a trend over the following months where users give a piece of advice or cut to a video after the lyric "step one." On May 25th, 2022, TikToker[2] @swirlyadrian1 posted a video telling people to graduate, garnering over 5 million views in three months (shown below, left). On July 3rd, TikToker[3] @yofavorite.gemini posted a video following the trend cutting to a video of someone shoplifting, garnering over 6.3 million views in two months (shown below, right).
On August 2nd, actress and TikToker[4] @skaijackson posted a video following the trend, garnering over 11.5 million views in a month (shown below). On August 26th, Distractify[5] published an article on the trend. On August 29th, Dexerto[6] published an article on the trend. On August 31st, Yahoo![7] posted an article on the trend.
