*Starts Dry Humping You* is a catchphrase often used in fake text or DM memes as a comical, inappropriate response to a message. The phrase first appeared in a fake text meme as early as February 2016, becoming increasingly popular in meme throughout the 2020s.
Origin
On February 6th, 2016, an Imgur[1] posted a screenshot of a text exchange between two people ultimately ending in the recipient writing, "*starts dry humping you*" to the sender (shown below). This is the earliest known version of the meme and is a repost from an unknown iFunny account. The meme was reposted to /r/cringepics[2] on January 21st, 2017, garnering over 700 upvotes in five years.
Spread
The phrase became increasingly popular in memes over the following years. On January 22nd, 2017, Facebook[3] page Social Anxiety Disorder Memes posted an image macro using the phrase, garnering over 90 shares and 570 reactions in five years. On September 2nd, 2020, Twitter[4] user @chaselyons posted, "wtf did my professor just email me," along with an email supposedly from his professor that reads, "*starts dry humping you,*" garnering over 315,000 likes and 27,000 retweets in two years (shown below). The meme was reposted to Instagram[5] on September 4th, garnering over 30,000 likes in a similar span of time.
On October 7th, Redditor lhargreaves posted a new version of the meme to /r/GoodFakeTexts,[6] garnering over 4,400 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On November 13th, Redditor silver_donut11 posted an Among Us version of the mem to /r/creepyasterisks,[7] garnering over 7,300 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).
On August 17th, 2021, Tumblr[8] user the-minecraft-funnies posted a version of the meme showing a fake email from Mojang using the phrase, garnering over 5,500 notes in a year (shown below). It was reposted to Instagram[9] on the 28th, garnering over 19,900 likes in a similar span of time.
