About

#StartCisShaming refers to a hashtag which originally started as a troll to generate controversy on Twitter. However, once the hashtag began to trend and was seen by people who did not know its original context, it generated controversy and jokes poking fun at cisgender people.

Origin

On December 1st, 2020, Twitter user @floweraiine[1] posted that she felt Twitter was often boring and wanted to try to get something trending with no explanation. She came up with the hashtag #startcisshaming[2] and asked her friends and followers to try and spread the hashtag on the platform (shown below).

Spread

Over the following hours, several users made tongue-in-cheek jokes bullying cisgender people. User @Koisurumiku[3] posted a picture of Hatsune Miku with the phrase, "nice gender loser did your parents pick it out for you?", gaining over 260 retweets and 1,400 likes (shown below, left). User @avdolkisser[4] posted a joke featuring a picture of Komaeda from Danganronpa, gaining over 50 retweets and 400 likes (shown below, right).

However, as the hashtag began spreading around Twitter, other users not in on the initial intent of the joke began to criticize the hashtag, thinking it was sincere. For example, user @augustchild1[5] posted a But That's None Of My Business meme about the hashtag, thinking it was perhaps a 4chan hoax, gaining over 200 retweets and 2,900 likes (shown below, left). User @chieP4D[6] posted that they felt the hashtag was another excuse for cis people to dislike LGBT people, gaining over 170 retweets and 1,800 likes.
