Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Poster Parodies refers to a series of photoshopped versions of the official poster for the 2019 science fiction action film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Origin

On April 16th, 2015, the poster and title reveal for the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released (shown below, left).[1] The layout and design became the template for the film's sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi a number of template generators were released, allowing people to design their own versions.[2]

Ahead of the release of the Rise of Skywalker poster, on January 9th, 2018, Tumblr [3] user kylosroboarm posted a series of poster parodies for the upcoming sequel, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The post received more than 10,000 notes in a year and a half (shown below).


On April 12th, 2019, the title and first poster for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker were revealed. When posted to the official Star Wars Twitter [4] account posted the image, and it received more than 16,000 retweets and 51,000 likes in less than one week (shown below).



Spread

Following the poster's release, parodies using the design of the image became much more common. For example, that day, Facebook [5] user elliott.boydstringer posted a version criticizing some of the character reveals in the first trailer in the Star Wars Sithposting shitposting group. The post received more than 2,000 reactions, 410 comments and 500 shares in three days (shown below, left).

Throughout the weekend, others began sharing parodies of the poster in the group.

Palpatine Poster Parodies

On August 24th, 2019, Disney[6] released a new poster for The Rise of Skywalker featuring the characters Rey, Kylo Ren and Emperor Palpatine (shown below, left).

Following the poster's release, people online began posting parodies of the design, replacing Palpatine with other images, such as Shrek and humorous images of Palaptine (examples below, center and right).
