Standing Deer refers to a photograph of a red deer standing on its hind legs taken by Twitter user Solene Marion. After posting the image to Twitter, other users joked about what the deer might be doing and edited the picture in photoshops.
Origin
On March 2nd, 2020, Twitter user @solenemarion3[1] posted a picture of a deer appearing to stand on its hind legs, writing, "How do think I should classify this red deer behaviour? #cameratraps #reddeer Only 15000 photos left to analyse." The picture gained over 1,000 retweets and 6,300 likes (shown below).
Spread
The picture inspired others to joke about what the deer may be up to. User @jamesk[2] posted a clip from Adventure Time reminiscent of the deer, gaining over 190 retweets and 3,800 likes (shown below, left). User @chloeevanssj[3] used the picture as a reaction image, gaining 36 likes (shown below, right).
Others made photoshops featuring the deer. For example, user @TomAckermanWx[4] made an edit featuring the deer standing at a deli counter, gaining over 150 likes (shown below, left). User @10footsamsquantch compared it to a popular GIF of a cat making a similar gesture, gaining over 100 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, right). The responses were covered by Twitter Events.[5]
