About
Spunch Bob is an intentional misspelling of "SpongeBob" that has been used in shitposting memes on Twitter and other social media sites. Spunch Bob jokes often use bizarre photoshops of scenes from SpongeBob SquarePants and describe the action in a nonsensical way.
Origin
On November 6th, 2020, Twitter user @big_brody_6[1] replied to a tweet from @ilovedamndaniel with "Oh hell nah they all up on spunch bob shit" with a still from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Home Sweet Pineapple" of Nemotodes using straws to suck the liquid out of SpongeBob's pineapple house, gaining over 50 retweets and 190 likes (shown below). In quote tweets, other users claimed the phrase was a reference to an inside joke made between themselves and @big_brody_6 during a Counter-Strike: GO match.[2][3]
Spread
On November 15th, 2020, the tweet was screenshot and posted on iFunny by user gayfellaz[4] (shown below, left). On November 18th, 2020, Tumblr[5] user sovietnam posted an image macro version of the meme, gaining over 4,000 notes (shown below, right).
The spread of the meme on Twitter was aided by a hashtag prompt which, when clicked, would auto-draft a tweet that read "Oh hell nah they all up on spunch bob shit" with a prompt for users to post the same tweet[6] (shown below, left). The popularity of the phrase led others to create variations with other misspellings of SpongeBob character names. For example, on December 28th, 2020, Redditor HoodClassicArchivist posted an example to /r/okbuddyretard,[7] gaining over 320 points (shown below, right).
