Sportsgasm is an Internet slang term for passionate, celebratory reactions to impressive plays and feats of athleticism witnessed during various sports competitions.

Origin

On April 2nd, 2007, Urban Dictionary^[3] user Jamie Douglas submitted an entry for the term "sportsgasm," defining it as "when the sheer volume and quality of live sport induces a feeling not dissimilar to an orgasm in you."

Spread

On June 11th, 2010, the web comic Sinfest^[4] published a comic titled "Sportsgasm," in which a character proclaims that a sportsgasm is "better than sex" (shown below).

On December 9th, 2014, the Felger and Mazz Vine channel posted a clip of a sports commentator announcing that he experienced "a full-on sportsgasm in my shorts" (shown below).

On January 7th, 2016, Redditor obadetona posted a video of a South Korean footballer Ji-Sung scoring a goal, resulting in the audience shouting "Yeah!" all at once (shown below). Within 24 hours, the post gained over 5,800 votes (92% upvoted) and 1,100 comments on /r/videos.^[1] That day, the /r/sportsgasm^[2] subreddit was launched for videos containing enthusiastic reactions at various competitions.
