SpongeBob "Call That X" Puns refers to a subset of Don't Leave Me/Take Me With You memes based on puns accompanied by images of SpongeBob and Squidward running away. Largely following the Don't Leave Me meme structure, the format gained popularity on Twitter in late June 2020.
Origin
On June 22nd, 2020, Twitter[1] user @BabyBtsStar posted made the earliest Don't Leave Me memes tweet utilizing a cropped frame of SpongeBob[2] running away from episode 232a "Mustard O' Mine" of SpongeBob SquarePants series, writing "Give a person dating a underaged girl a phone. I call that phone case." The tweet (shown below, left) received over 140 retweets and comments and 1,100 likes in two weeks. On the same day, professional eSports player SonicFox made two Don't Leave Me[3][4] tweets utilizing this and another still image from SpongeBob SquarePants. The tweets received over 180 retweets and comments and 2,100 likes and 140 retweets and comments and 1,200 likes in two weeks, respectively (shown below, center and right).
Precursor
SpongeBob "Call That X" Puns is a subgenre of Don't Leave Me / Take Me With You meme format which went viral on TikTok in June 2020. The memes typically feature one person making a wordplay joke then running away while the person filming yells "Don't leave me!" and "Take me with you!"
Spread
Later on June 22nd, Twitter[5] user @_sammiibaby posted a Call That X SpongeBob meme that received over 30,000 retweets and comments and 147,200 likes (shown below), igniting the viral spread of the format on Twitter in the following days.
Starting on June 23rd, multiple viral tweets following the format were posted by Twitter users; for example, a June 23rd, 2020, tweet[6] by @_joocelynn received over 44,700 retweets and comments and 206,800 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On June 24th, Twitter[7] user @AshyMalik posted a tweet that gained over 15,600 retweets and comments and 101,900 likes (shown below, right).
Om July 5th, 2020, Instagram[8] account "takemewithuig" was created, collecting notable SpongeBob Don't Leave Me memes. The account accumulated over 15,500 followers in three days.
