Spider-Woman 2099 refers to a fan art trend of genderbent depictions of the character Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man 2099 from the Spider-Man comics and the 2023 animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as well as a viral debate surrounding it. The trend became prominent on Twitter after an artist was criticized for not making their genderbent version of O'Hara as muscular as the male counterpart.

Origin

On June 16th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @envisavenue posted a video of their genderbent fan art of the character Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man 2099 from the recently released animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The video received over 959,000 views and 263,000 likes in four days.

On June 16th, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @TheScarletVT reuploaded the video with a humorous comment about being horny for genderbent Miguel O'Hara. The post (shown below) received over 6,100 retweets and 50,000 likes in four days.

On June 17th, 2023, artist Kamii Momoru (@Kamii_momoru) tweeted^[3] a genderbent fan art of Spider-Man 2099 that received over 10,500 retweets and 96,800 likes in three days (tweet and artwork shown below, left and right).

On June 18th, 2023, Twitter^[4]^[5] user @blursluts44 quote tweeted the artwork with a comment criticizing the artist for not making the female version as muscular as the original character. The tweets (shown below, left and right) received over 1,400 retweets and 32,700 likes in two days.

The tweets, as well as similar tweets made by several other users,^[6] prompted viral reactions in which Twitter users defended @Kamii_momoru, stating that artists are free to follow their own vision while condemning the harassment. For example, a June 18th tweet^[7] posted by user @ComicLoverMari received over 1,100 retweets and 20,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). On June 18th, 2023, Twitter^[8] user @Foreverheroics pointed out that in the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a gender-bent version of the character Dr. Ock does not match the original character's body type, with the tweet gaining over 3,600 retweets and 63,900 likes in two days.

Following @Kamii_momoru's artwork, the trend of creating fan art depictions of genderbent Miguel O'Hara, commonly referred to as Spider-Woman 2099, achieved online popularity. For example, on June 18th, artist @dovahcaine tweeted^[9] an artwork that received over 2,300 retweets and 15,700 likes in two days (shown below, left). Later that day, artist @yoracrab posted^[10] their version that earned over 7,900 retweets and 70,400 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Kamii Momoru Blackmailed

On June 20th, 2023, Kamii Momoru (@Kamii_momoru), the artist behind the fan art that launched the trend, shared^[11] screenshots of a person blackmailing her to make a public apology for her past views and posts and to publicly disavow a Twitter mutual.
