Speed Dance, also referred to as the Buss It Challenge or the IShowSpeed Dance, is a viral dance and social challenge popularized by Twitch streamer IShowSpeed in May 2021. The dance is essentially a twerk done to a specific Milwaukee trap song released in July 2018. The dance was originally performed in the 2018 music video by the song's artist and went viral across Facebook and Twitter for being suspect and out of place in the video. The Speed Dance later became a trend on TikTok in July 2021.

Origin

Original Steve the Stonerz Music Video

The Speed Dance originates from the music video^[1] for "2 Busy" by Steve the Stonerz, uploaded to YouTube on July 27th, 2018. In the video (shown below) Steve the Stonerz does a twerk dance when the beat drops within the first 30 seconds. As of September 2021, the music video has roughly 1.6 million views and 48,000 likes.

IShowSpeed Dance

In May 2021, Twitch streamer IShowSpeed performed the dance on his livestream between playing games of UFC 3. The clip of him performing the dance^[2] was uploaded to YouTube on June 2nd, 2021, by the account, Swiftyplug (shown below).

The original music video received some attention in 2018, like a couple of YouTube reaction videos to the dance. For instance, the YouTube account Getoff Production uploaded a reaction video^[3] on September 18th, 2018 (shown below), and received roughly 29,000 views over the course of three years.

However, after IShowSpeed did the dance on his Twitch stream in May 2021, it became a recurring theme on his streams. For instance, IShowSpeed did the dance in front of Souja Boy live on stream on August 29th, 2021. The clip can be accessed on TikTok, uploaded by user @thelorddavish^[5] on August 30th, 2021.

Starting in August 2021, TikTokers began doing the dance and calling it the "Speed Dance." On August 9th, 2021, TikToker, @jjisfamous2 uploaded the first known video^[4] of someone doing the dance on the platform. The TikTok (shown below) received roughly 216,000 views and 17,000 likes over the course of one month.

For the remainder of August 2021 going into September, the trend gained traction on TikTok. Users posted videos most notably rating their friends doing the challenge at school or asking random people to do the challenge. TikToker @smooovwill, for example, posted^[6] the first "rate my teammates" version of the trend on August 26th, 2021 (shown below), and received roughly 443,000 views and 79,000 likes over the course of three weeks.

TikTokers also began doing the dance in front of their parents in September 2021. TikToker @leooutsidenyc posted^[7] the first version of this part of the trend on September 8th, 2021 (shown below), of him doing the dance in front of his dad whose a church pastor. This TikTok received roughly 3.2 million views and 528,000 likes over the course of two weeks.
