About
Special Australian Edition refers to a joke popular on Twitter in which people take famous movie stills and subtitle the famous quotes associated with the image in an Australian dialect, the idea being the still image comes from a special Australian edition of the film.
Origin
On November 13th, 2016, Twitter user @IllyBocean uploaded a still image from The Omen (1976)[1] in which the child's nanny, about to hang herself, cries "Look at me, Damien! It's all for you!" In @IllyBocean's "Special Australian Edition" parody, the subtitle reads "Oi, look at me, Damo. It's fucken all for you, ey." The tweet gained over 120 retweets and 400 likes (shown below).
Spread
Over the following months, @IllyBocean uploaded roughly a dozen more tweets playing off the joke, and their popularity was covered in articles by Buzzfeed[2] and Mashable.[3] Some of his most popular tweets include quotes from The Dark Knight (2008), with over 900 retweets (shown below, left), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) with over 500 retweets (shown below, right).
@IllyBocean continued to post various jokes in the template, and has contributed the most to the meme. The most notable variation was posted on July 26th, 2017, when @LucyXIV[4] uploaded a joke using a quote from Star Wars: A New Hope that gained over 300 retweets (shown below).
