About

Space Burger refers to a viral video in which a cheeseburger from the McDonald's restaurant chain was floated 26 miles above the earth and consumed when it returned.

Origin

On March 28th, 2019, YouTuber Killem posted a video entitled "I Sent a McDonald's Big Mac to Space & Ate It (First McDonalds Burger in Space)." The video features the YouTuber purchasing a Big Mac cheeseburger from the restaurant and attaching it to a weather balloon. The balloon was sent more than 100,000 feet into the air, when the balloon popped and sent the burger back by parachute. Within one week, the video received more than 650,000 views (shown below).

Spread

That day, the Colchester United football grounds, the training area for the Colchester United soccer team, tweeted a thread about the burger, which had been discovered on their grounds (shown below).

The following day, they published a video interview with the YouTuber. They wrote, "Tuning into Twitter today and wondering why all this talk of a #SpaceBurger, then this will tell you all you need to know" (shown below).

Additionally, that day, the Colchester United Football Club tweeted a photograph of food from McDonald's that came courtesy of the fast-food restaurant (shown below, left and center).[1][2] McDonald's also tweeted about the Space Burger. McDonald's responded, "Hope you enjoyed the burgers" (shown below, right).[3]

Several media outlets covered the video and experiment, including Uproxx,[4] LADBible,[5] BBC[6] and more.
