About

Soywave is a subgenre and a development of the Schizowave music edits that feature Soyjak characters, often mixed with various memetic imagery, in rapid-fire, flashing montages. In July 2023, an edit known as ChudBob SoyPants went viral online and was displayed on a Times Square billboard. The edits are often set to a sped-up version of "All the Things She Said" by T.a.T.u.

Origin

Soywave is a development of the Schizowave edit format in which imagery associated with various beliefs, conspiracy theories and mental disorders (such as schizophrenia and gangstalking), often intermingled with various memes, are set to various remixes and mashups. The format achieved popularity in 2021 on imageboards and social media following the virality of Gotye Wokeuplikethis Hyperborea in 2020.

On YouTube, the earliest found Soywave edits were shared by YouTube[1] user Hyperjumper in early 2023. For example, on February 4th, 2023, Hyperjumper posted a soywave version of One Punch Man intro that received over 12,500 views in five months (shown below).

Spread

On May 14th, 2023, Hyperjumper posted a soywave edit titled "Chudbob Soypants," editing Soyjak faces (including Chudjak, Impjak and other popular versions) onto SpongeBob and other SpongeBob SquarePants characters (shown below). The edit garnered over 182,000 views on YouTube[2] in two months. The song used in the edit is a sped-up version of "All the Things She Said" by the Russian band t.A.T.u.

The edit saw viral spread online in the following months. For example, on June 1st, 2023, Redditor IEatChildren885 posted it in the /r/shizoposters[3] subreddit, where it received over 540 upvotes in one month. On July 6th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @Gravantus reuploaded it, commenting, "This video haunts me. It's utterly captivating in construction but lack of purpose." The tweet accumulated over 5,700 retweets and 35,500 likes in four days (shown below).

On July 7th, 2023, Twitter[5] user quote tweeted a street cam video of Friday Night Funkin' being broadcast on an advertisement screen called TSX Live in Times Square, New York City, suggesting that "ChudBob SoyPants" should be broadcast instead. Later that day, Twitter[6] user @_punkape_ then tweeted a video of "ChudBob SoyPants" being displayed on the same screen, with the video accumulating over 4,600 retweets and 25,700 likes in three days (shown below).
