About
Sorrows, Sorrows, Prayers refers to a quote from the 2023 Netflix mini-series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in which Queen Charlotte (played by Golda Rosheuvel) is half-heartedly consoling a crying Prince George (played by Ryan Gage). The audio of her catchphrase in the scene became a TikTok meme in May 2023, when meme creators added captions to Prince George crying or just used the TikTok sound with another video.
Origin
On May 4th, 2023, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was added to Netflix for streaming.[1] Within a scene in the first episode of the mini-series titled "Crown Jewels," Queen Charlotte addresses the room, saying, "The only heir to the throne is dead." The statement makes Prince George cry to which Queen Charlotte says," Sorrows, sorrows, prayers."
On May 5th, 2023, TikToker[2] @variant.edits made an edit of the scene that included Vine Thuds and referenced Bombastic Side Eye, gaining roughly 1.3 million plays and 322,100 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). In the days that followed, TikTokers started using the TikTok[3] sound, isolating Queen Charlotte's "Sorrows, sorrows, prayers," catchphrase. For instance, the first known creator to do so was TikToker[4] @oky.boomer2 on May 7th, whose video gained roughly 2.2 million plays and 671,100 likes in 12 days (shown below, right).
Spread
