Sonic Forces Persona 5 Costume, also known as Fursona 5, refers to the Persona 5-themed player skin for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog video game Sonic Forces. After the costume was announced in late August 2017, many online made jokes describing it as a furry depiction of the Persona 5 protagonist.
Origin
On August 31st, 2017, the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account announced several pre-order bonus costumes for Sonic Forces, which included skin based on the protagonist Joker from Persona 5 (shown below).[1] Following the announcement, many began joking that the costume was a depiction of Joker's "fursona."
Spread
That day, Redditor Blitz_Kid_48 submitted the tweet to /r/PS4, pointing out the Persona 5 outfit. Also on August 31st, 2017, Tumblr user nyarlylicious[5] posted a photoshopped Animorphs book cover titled "Fursona 5," featuring the Sonic Forces costume morphing into the Persona 5 character (shown below, left). The following day, Tumblr user ravage-trash[6] posted a "Learn the Difference" image macro labelling Joker as "Persona" and the Sonic Forces costume as "Fursona" (shown below, right).
Meanwhile, Redditor sonicsonic3 submitted a photoshopped version of the Sonic Forces costume edited with a Persona 5 "battle menu" to /r/Person5[3] (shown below). That day, Kotaku[2] published an article entitled "The Internet Reacts To Sonic Forces' Persona 5 Costume," highlighting a variety of reactions to the announcement on Tumblr and Twitter.[2]
