About

Sonic Dying In The Hospital or Sonic Please Tell Me refers to a phrasal template meme featuring an image of Sonic in a hospital bed dying while Knuckles is at his side crying. Knuckles asks him a crucial question, sometimes related to grammar or a random fact. The meme started to be used as an image macro in early 2020, spreading to meme pages across other social media platforms.

Origin

On September 6th, 2012, Deviant Art[1] user Called1-for-Jesus uploaded a fan art image of Sonic dying in a hospital bed and Knuckles crying at his side. The image received 50,500 views and 719 favorites in 11 years (seen below).

The first instance of this template being used as a meme is unknown, but it appears the meme first became popularized as an image macro meme on Reddit[2] in February 2020, after user u/pixelpudding uploaded the fan art with an overlay caption saying "please Sonic, what is the quadratic fromula." The post (seen below) garnered 458 upvotes and 75 comments in three years.

Spread

A few months later, on May 7th, 2020, a subreddit community user u/babymorgue[3] uploaded another version of the meme with the overlay caption "Sonic, how do I Juju on that beat." The post garnered 22 upvotes and 13 comments (seen below).

The image was later turned into an image macro template for math memes in which Knuckles is asking for Sonic’s help to solve the problems. For instance, on May 8th, 2021, Reddit[4] user u/walter938 uploaded a trigonometric statement problem alongside Sonic’s meme and the overlay text asking, "without giving me the answer…" The post received 216 upvotes and 66 comments in two years (seen below).

Sonic Me Diga

The meme also reached the Brazilian Portuguese audience with the “Sonic Me Diga” phrasal template focusing on grammar questions that Knuckles is asking for Sonic’s help to solve. For example, Twitter[5] user @brusnos posted a version of the meme with an overlay text asking Sonic where to put an accent in the word “réveillon.” Uploaded on December 26th, 2022, the post (seen below) received 41,400 likes and 5,600 retweets in three months.
