"Sometimes My Genius…It's Almost Frightening" is a memorable quote uttered by television host Jeremy Clarkson on an episode of the British television series Top Gear.

Origin

On March 10th, 2013, the episode "Africa Special: Part 2" of Top Gear aired.^[1] In the episode, Clarkson ties a log to the rear of his car as a make-shift handbrake. Commenting on the success of the device, Clarkson said, "Sometimes my genius…it's almost frightening" (clip below).

On March 11th, 2013, Tumblr^[2] user purveyor-of-sin shared a GIF story of the scene with the caption, "Sometimes my genius is frightening." The post received more than 2,300 notes in less than seven years (shown below).

One of the earliest uses of the image as a meme was published in a GIF story by Tumblr^[3] user somesayhowhardcanitbe on November 13th, 2014. The post received more than 250 notes in six years (shown below, left).

On April 12th, 2019, Redditor ^[4] Doses_of_Happiness posted a template of the image as a reaction image macro in the /r/InsiderMemeTrading subreddit. The post received more than 560 points (99% upvoted) in less than one year (shown below, center).

Later that year, on September 6th, 2019, Redditor^[5] Chubbz17 shared a variation with the caption "You're piloting a bone mech that's using meat armor." The post received more than 20,000 points (96% upvoted) and 100 comments in less than one year (shown below, right).
