Someone Will Die. Of Fun. refers to an image macro and redraw series based on a scene from Parks and Recreation in which April Ludgate says, "Someone will die," and Andy Dwyer chimes in, "Of fun." The scene comes from an October 2011 episode of the show and became the subject of memes as early as 2013.

Origin

On October 27th, 2011, season four episode five of Parks and Recreation aired, in which April and Andy throw a Halloween party.^[1] At one point, the two are describing their party and April says, "Someone will die," Andy adding, "Of fun!"

On January 1st, 2013, Tumblr^[2] user parksandrecandfoodandstuff posted the dialogue from the scene, garnering around 15 notes in nine years. On October 22nd, Redditor jakecronin343 posted a captioned version of the scene to /r/funny,^[3] titled "If a cat and a dog got married this is what it would look like," garnering over 2,600 upvotes in nine years (shown below). This is one of the earliest known memes using the scene.

Spread

The meme spread as an image macro over the following years. On November 25th, 2016, the Buzzfeed Animals Facebook^[4] page posted a screenshot of a now-deleted Tumblr meme making the same joke as Redditor jakecronin343, garnering over 26,000 relations and 6,100 shares in six years. On February 28th, 2017, the Car Memes Facebook^[5] page posted another meme using the image, garnering over 1,600 shares and 7,600 reactions in five years (shown below).

As early as 2018, people began posting redraws of the scene, replacing April and Andy with characters that have similar dynamics as them. For example, on August 26th, 2018, the official Telltale Games Facebook^[6] page shared a redraw of the scene using characters from The Walking Dead game by now-deleted Tumblr user mangomango-j. On November 1st, 2019, Tumblr^[7] user symphysis posted a redraw using Deltarune characters, garnering over 25,000 notes in three years (shown below).

On January 7th, 2020, Instagram^[8] artist thedanielhd posted a redraw of the scene using The Witcher characters Geralt and Jaskier, garnering over 13,000 likes in two years (shown below, left). On April 3rd, 2022, Instagram^[9] user agentsof_marvel posted a meme using the captioned scene in reference to Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, garnering over 25,000 likes in six months. On May 5th, Facebook^[10] page These Mmes Are Canon posted another Moon Knight redraw, garnering over 1,000 shares and 1,700 reactions in six months (shown below, right).
