Some of You May Die is a quote from the 2001 animated film Shrek. The full line, "Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make," is said by Lord Farquaad to knights preparing to battle for the opportunity to become the champion that will save Princess Fiona. In the 2010s, the line became an image macro paired with captions describing situations where people seem to not care whether another lives or dies.

Origin

In the film Shrek, released May 18th, 2001, Lord Farquaad arranges for a contest between knights of Duloc to compete to become champion and rescue Princess Fiona. As he says the conditions of the tournament, he tells the knights "Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make" (shown below).

Spread

The moment began seeing use as an image macro in 2014. On January 28th, 2014, the image appeared on 9GAG with the caption "My university's thought process about not canceling school with a -30 degree wind chill," gaining over 18,000 points^[1] (shown below).

In February of 2015, a pair of posts using the image gained thousands of points on Reddit, a post by Thalaas in /r/AdviceAnimals ^[2] (shown below, left) and a post by MisterVortex in /r/funny^[3] (shown below, right).

The image continued seeing use on Reddit over the following years. Popular posts from the late 2010s include a post by Thirdeev in /r/fakehistoryporn that gained over 45,000 points (shown below, left) and a post by SirPounces in /r/medicalschool, gaining over 880 points (shown below, right).
