About

Some of Y'all Would Melt Down In This Situation / One Has to Go is an exploitable image macro meme in which creators replace six squares with concepts, clichés, people and stereotypes (etc.) out of which the viewer must choose one that they could omit from their life. However, the top-most text of the template proclaims that some of the viewers would "melt down in this situation," suggesting that they could not even omit one. The original meme was shared on Instagram in mid-2021, and it was later reposted in a 2022 Instagram story where the top-most text was added. Going into 2023, meme creators on Instagram and Twitter, among other platforms, recaptioned and exploited the Instagram story screenshot to fit many stereotypes and clichés, which became more niche and ironic over time. The format is notably similar to starter pack memes.

Origin

On August 16th, 2021, Instagram[1] and Facebook[2] user @fakeyeezyboots posted a meme that had top text reading, "ONE HAS TO GO," and inserted six items such as A24, Arc'teryx and oat milk, among others, seemingly portraying a niche type of modern man. On Facebook,[2] the meme gained over 740 reactions and on Instagram[1] it received roughly 10,800 likes in two years (shown below).

The aforementioned post earned one known repost on Instagram[3] in August 2021. It wasn't until about a year later that the meme was reposted again by Instagram[4] user @dopecontent.inc2 on December 13th, 2022, gaining roughly 1,200 likes in six months. On December 14th, 2022, iFunnier[5] @coughing posted a screenshot of an Instagram story of an unknown origin which seemingly shared @dopecontent.inc2's repost with top text reading, "some of y'all would melt down in this situation" (shown below). The iFunny post gained over 40 smiles in six months and is currently the first known posting of the screenshot.

Spread

A few days later, on December 17th, 2022, Instagram[6] user emonite uploaded the first known variation of the format, gaining roughly 3,600 likes in six months (shown below, left). The format gained increased usage months later, in June 2023, directly following a post shared by Instagram[7] user @lifes.a.bender on June 20th, 2023, which received roughly 24,700 likes in one week (shown below, right).

Then, Instagram[8] user @manicpixiememequeen uploaded an iteration on June 23rd, 2023, gaining roughly 11,700 likes in four days (shown below, left). @manicpixiememequeen posted more viral memes following the format to Instagram[9] in the days that followed. The buzz then spread to Twitter. For instance, on June 24th, Twitter[10] user @realestgirI tweeted an iteration, gaining roughly 2,600 likes in three days (shown below, right).

Iterations persisted on both Instagram[11] and Twitter[12] in late June 2023.
