Snoop Dogg's Selfie "Memes" refer to a series of selfies and image macros posted by American hip hop artist Snoop Dogg on the popular image-sharing platform Instagram, typically accompnied by the question "meme?" or captions urging his followers to create a meme out of them. Elsewhere online, the celebrity rapper's self-described "meme" posts are often cited as cringeworthy examples of misappropriation of the meme subculture among celebrities and popular culture at large.

Origin

On November 1st, 2014, Snoop Dogg posted a selfie of himself wearing a hair wrap with the caption reading "Somebody make a meme out of this pic" to his Instagram account,^[1] accruing over 14,400 likes and more than 900 comments. In the following months, the rapper continued to express his fascination with the meme subculture by sharing a series of similarly captioned selfies and image macros referencing a variety of internet memes.

Although the rapper's "meme" selfies drew generally positive feedback and comments from his fans and followers on Instagram, the images were met with less than enthusiastic reactions elsewhere online. By early 2015, numerous compilations of Snoop Dogg's "meme selfie" posts from his Instagram account had been submitted to Imgur, beginning with Imgur user hashtagyoureit's submission of an album titled “Snoop Dogg Wants to be a Meme"^[4] on January 22nd, and followed by at least three similar repost submissions on January 24th, February 1st and March 1st.

On January 21st, the original Imgur compilation made its way onto Tumblr", where the post garnered nearly 480,000 likes and reblogs, prompting many meme-savvy users to poke fun at Snoop Dogg's "meme obsession" with a series of photoshopped parodies and image macros featuring the rapper's face coupled with visual or textual references to a variety of widely recognized internet memes. On February 18th, Encyclopedia Dramatica forum member Oddguy posted the image compilation in a discussion thread titled "Snoop wanting to be a meme is a new meme."

Media Coverage

On January 28th, 2015, The Chive's viral media blog The Berry^[2] reported on the rapper's conspicuous attempts at forcing memes in an article titled “Snoop Dogg really wants to be a meme.” On March 3rd, the Australian pop music blog The Music ran a similar compilation article with the same headline.
