Origin
In the original clip taken from the 1950 episode entitled "Jerry and the Lion," Tom sneaks behind a door while doing an evil laugh as he plans to catch Jerry. Shortly after, Tom closes and locks the door as he gets outsmarted and physically beaten by Jerry off screen.
The earliest known appearance of the image can be traced back to a tweet posted by @Tweets_2dope[1] on July 27th, 2013, although its usage as a meme didn't begin until early 2016.

On June 6th, 2016, MemeDroid[3] user derpherpmerp uploaded an image of Tom from the scene along with a caption about trying to mend things with an ex-girlfriend.
On June 22nd, a dedicated page for "Sneaky Tom" image macros was created on Memegenerator.net.[4] On June 25th, Google Plus[5] user Jonny be good Gaming posted an image macro featuring "Sneaky Tom" with a caption about using a neighbor's wifi.
On March 19th, 2017, @WorldStar[2] shared a "Sneaky Tom" image with a caption about Quavo, one of the three members in the southern hip hop group Migos, sneaking off to work on feature collaborations with other recording artists.
