About

"Smash Face On Keyboard, Post Results!" is a type of forum gaming activity that involves striking one's head against the keyboard and posting the result in a serial thread. Since its introduction via 4chan in early 2009, the phenomenon has spread to hundreds of websites and forums. While it has been criticized as spamming or trolling, the forum game remains quite popular to this day for its spontaneous appeal.

Origins

On January 28th, 2009, a thumbnail image appeared on 4chan simply reading "SMASH FACE ON KEYBOARD POST RESULTS", with the creator only having "78y6u" in his post, presumably from smashing his face on his keyboard. Hundreds of replies were posted instantly after the original post, mostly consisting of randomly stroke letters and numbers. In the following weeks, the image was re-posted numerous times on the imageboard site and the phenomenon caught the attention of other blogs and forums, one of the earliest reports coming from the internet culture blog GiveUpInternet.[1]

Spread

By the end of 2009, the 4chan thread game had been mentioned by websites numbering in hundreds and spawned copycat threads on other discussion forums and communities. Throughout 2010, new "Smash Your Head on Keyboard" threads continued to emerge.

Some of the notable example threads can be found on Bungie[2], Explosm[3], FacePunch[9] and NeoSeeker[4] forums, with an especially strong following on gaming-related forums like MinecraftForum[5], Pokemon Vortex[6] and MapleStory community BasilMarket[7] forum. In addition, there is a Facebook[8] group of "Smash Face on Keyboard, Post Result" which has over 225 members and hundreds of reply posts on the wall.

Derivatives

Since rising to popularity, "Smash Face on Keyboard" threads have led to a number of derivative games like "Type with your eyes closed," "Swipe your hand across your keyboard," and "Type with your keyboard upside down."
