Slut Era

About

Slut Era is a catchphrase that was popularized on Twitter in September 2022. Memes with the slang find the poster claiming they're in their "slut era," but rather than do something debaucherous and fun, they elect to do something nerdy or anti-social.

Origin

While there's no definitive definition for the term, "slut era" may indicate a period of time when one parties and embraces making questionable decisions, similar to Hot Girl Summer. On April 27th, 2022, actor Dylan O'Brien^[1] simply tweeted the phrase "slut era," gaining over 158,000 retweets and 822,000 likes in five months (shown below).

In August 2022, Elite Daily^[2] attempted to define "Slut Era," concluding it had little to do with sexual promiscuity, as the term "slut" might indicate, and instead, "Slut era is less about your actions and more about the attitude behind them. As long as you’re doing it for you, congrats, it’s slut era-worthy."

One of the early high engagement parodies of the term "slut era" came mere hours after O'Brien's tweet. On April 27th, Twitter user @bimbogofpinky^[3] tweeted, "slut era (i literally only want him) but slut era," gaining over 31,000 retweets and 262,000 likes in five months (shown below).

Spread

The slang term began seeing more widespread use in parodies starting in mid-to-late September 2022. For example, on September 18th, 2022, Twitter user @milkycarousel^[4] tweeted, ""slut era" she whispers while in a committed long term monogamous relationship and she only leaves her apartment for groceries," gaining over 15,000 retweets and 137,000 likes in four days (shown below, left). On September 20th, Twitter user @campbellbain^[5] tweeted, "“slut era” i say as i rot and decay in my bedroom and watch the years pass me by as i miss out on core experiences other people my age are having," gaining over 50,000 retweets and 236,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
