About
Slug Maze is a pathway made out of table salt for slugs to navigate without touching the sides. If a slug touches salt, it is often killed as water leaves its body due to the process of osmosis.
Origin
On April 29th, 2003, Livejournal[2] user TheTeague posted several pictures of a slug travelling through a table salt maze in a post titled "I am such a sadistic bastard."
Spread
On August 27th, 2005, YTMND user mydogyoshi created a page titled "Slug in a Salt Maze", which featured one of TheTeague's slug maze photographs (shown below, left). On August 16th, 2008, Ebaumsworld[4] member zocoria uploaded a Demotivational poster image macro featuring the same photograph (shown below, right).
On June 13th, 2012, Redditor Nabillia submitted a screenshot of a Facebook post featuring a dead slug who failed to traverse a slug maze to the /r/funny[1] subreddit (shown below, left). Prior to being archived, the post gained over 1,700 votes (93% upvoted). On June 19th, the "I'm Not Right in the Head" Facebook[3] page posted another slug maze photo, which accumulated more than 5,400 likes and 250 comments over the next two years (shown below, right).
On April 27th, 2013, YouTuber lnjcmdall uploaded a video titled "Salt Maze for a Snail," featuring a dead snail on the edge of a salt maze (shown below).
