About
Skibidi Bop Mm Dada (spelling varies) refers to a sound effect used by YouTuber ReviewTechUSA as the intro of his videos. A recording of a person scat singing followed by a sound of an explosion, starting in late 2019, the sound effect found popularity in short shitposts depicting various explosions, not unlike WTF BOOM! memes.
Origin
On August 31st, 2009, YouTuber ReviewTechUSA uploaded[10] the video "THE INTERNET = NO PRIVACY?!?!?!?" in which a short audio clip of a person scat singing "skibidi bop mm dada," appeared, followed by an explosion sound (shown below, left). On January 19th, 2012, YouTuber ReviewTechUSA[1] introduced a new intro for his channel based on the clip (shown below, right). The video received over 172,000 views in eight years (largely due to meme popularity).
Starting on January 23rd, 2012, ReviewTechUSA[2] used the clip as an entry for his videos, later updating the intro animation but keeping the sound effect (2012 and 2019 videos shown below).
The exact first use of the sound effect is unconfirmed, but is presumed to be a shitpost posted by iFunny[3] user FloridianFlameGator on a December 31st, 2019. In the video, the sound effect, with the amplified explosion part, accompanies a clip of a toilet exploding from 2012 viral video "How To Unblock A Toilet."[4] The post received over 1,300 smiles in one year (shown below).
Spread
On January 6th, 2020, YouTuber[5] xXxEpic gamerxXx reuploaded the video, with the upload gaining over 410,000 views in ten months. The earliest viral variations of the meme, started appearing on iFunny and Instagram in late January 2020. For example, on January 27th, Instagram[6] user asdfcobii posted a SWAOS meme that received over 12,000 views and 3,200 likes in ten months (shown below, left). On February 1st, 2020, iFunny[7] user JohnnyTesticles posted a Vince McMahon meme that received over 3,400 smiles on the platform (shown below, right).
Starting in early February 2020, the sound effect received viral spread on iFunny, primarily being used to accompany short clips of various explosions, also spreading via Instagram, Twitter and Discord servers. For example, a meme posted by iFunny[8] user Shockwave on February 4th, 2020, received over 3,000 likes in nine months (shown below, left). A meme posted by iFunny[9] user ComedyKnight on February 9th received 640 smiles in the same period (shown below, right).
The meme gained further prominence through its use in various 21st Century Humor videos alongside other popular sound effects though 2020.
