History

In early July 2016, Womate.io was launched by Oleksandr Godoba. This is evident by the official Wormate.io Twitter[1] account's start date, as well as the earliest known Internet Archive[2] of the URL, being made on July 11th, 2016.

Gameplay

In Wormate.io, a player starts as a small worm within a large, open-world environment. The goal of the game is to eliminate others by forcing them to run into your worm's body head-first. Once an opposing worm bumps into the body, they evaporate into particle remains which can be eaten up to grow larger. The end goal is to survive as long as possible and grow as big as possible in order to climb the leaderboard.

The longer and wider a player's worm is the more susceptible other worms are to running into it. Additionally, the longer the worm the easier it is to trap other players in a spiraling circle of the body. This trapping technique is an effective way to absorb opponents, utilized by many top Wormate players.

Up to 300 players can compete within the same environment. Also, there are two gameplay modes available called "Deathmatch" and "Team Deathmatch."[3]

Wormate.io vs. Slither.io

The difference in gameplay between Wormate.io and the precursor game Slither.io is in the "sweet stuff," which can be found in the open world. These include symbols like donuts and cakes that can additionally be consumed outside of evaporated opponent materials. Another key difference is the skins that are used for the worms. In comparison to the snakes in Slither.io, Wormate.io's worms have faces and are generally flashier.

Online Presence

Wormate.io was played by gaming YouTubers starting in 2017. At first, many of the YouTubers making content with the game were migrating from their Slither.io content. For instance, on February 22nd, 2017, YouTuber DevinPerks Gaming posted a Wormate.io video that received roughly 5.9 million views over the course of five years (shown below, left). On April 27th, 2017, YouTuber Slither MasterSp posted a Wormate.io video that earned roughly 11.3 million views in five years (shown below, right).

In 2021, the game started to become notable on TikTok within TikTok livestreams as well as just appearing on peoples' "For You" pages. For instance, on December 8th, 2021, TikToker[4] fvggamer posted a Wormate.io TikTok that earned roughly 16.4 million plays and 653,600 likes in six months (shown below, left). On February 25th, 2022, TikToker[5] glitch_glitch109 posted a video that earned roughly 5.1 million plays and 188,200 likes in three months (shown below, right).
