Weird Spotify Playlists is a gimmick Twitter account that posts screenshots of unusual and humorous Spotify playlists, particularly those of the Spotify Playlist Messages variety. The account gained viral popularity in July 2021, with a dedicated subreddit also created.

History

On May 9th, 2021, Twitter[1] gimmick account Weird Spotify Playlists (@weirdspotify) was created. On July 5th, 2021, the account posted its first tweet,[2] a screenshot of Spotify[3] playlist "male manipulator gaslighting you in his parents basement" (shown below). The tweet received over 550 retweets and 6,300 likes in ten days.



On July 6th, the account posted its first tweet[4] to gain over 6,000 retweets and 40,000 likes (shown below, left). On July 9th, 2021, the account posted a tweet[5] that received over 25,400 retweets and 237,000 likes (shown below, right).



On July 7th, Redditor[6][7] materthe created /r/weirdspotifyplaylists subreddit for the purposes of collecting screenshots of unusual and humorous Spotify playlists.

Features

Weird Spotify Playlists posts screenshots of Spotify playlists that are unusual or humorous. Many posts by the account Spotify Playlist Messages, playlists that have intentionally been arranged to form a message such as a popular copypasta. The Spotify Playlist Message meme format initially gained popularity in April 2017.

Highlights

Multiple posts made by the account went viral, accumulating over 100,000 likes. As of July 2021, a screenshot of "sandwich" Spotify playlist, tweeted[9] on July 10th, and a screenshot of "i can't pick a font for my essay" playlist, tweeted[10] on July 12th, were the most liked posts by the account, gaining over 214,000 and 294,000 likes, respectively (shown below, left and right).
