About

Create a Touhou Character, also commonly called Walfas or Create.swf, is an online character and a virtual paper doll program based off of characters and settings from the Touhou Project series. The Flash, created by someone going by "KirbyM", has a large following due to its flexibility. It can now also cater variety of vanilla or stock props as well as custom made ones, such as characters and more additional props.

History of Create.swf or Walfas

The first iteration of the Flash was released on September 2, 2007 and featured only four characters.^[1] The ability to create scenes with the characters was not added until 2008, when a programmer named Thefre overhauled the Flash to its modern version.^[2] In 2009, a Theater Mode was released, which paved the way for comics and videos made with the Flash.^[3] More characters, backgrounds, and features were added over the years, although as of 2015 the Flash is only updated when new Touhou characters are revealed and to be added.

Reception

Create a Touhou Character is extremely popular among Touhou fans on the Internet as well as with anime fans in general, due in part to its extreme flexibility. A DeviantArt search for Walfas returns over 40,000 results.^[4] A Walfas Wikia hosts over 250 pages on creators and characters related to the Flash.^[5] In 2013, YouTube user D4V1N5 uploaded a Walfas version of a video made by YouTuber HoySolaGerman, which gained over 300,000 views.

Walfas Communities

Due to how easy to use Create.swf is, it have harbored many newcomers and Touhou Fans alike, so communities would be present. From creating silly 4-komas, animated skit and even a 1-hour feature length video!^[6], members making custom items that isn't present in the stock, and even creating and recreating spell cards!

As of current time, there are two major Walfas Groups in DeviantArt:
Walfas Wagon Station and Walfas Club.

…But we can safely say that Walfas Wagon Station have over 600 members and Walfas Club nearly reaching 600 members as well.

More or less, this primarily focuses more on the 'Fun' aspect.

In create.swf, there is a background called "Fusion Lab." which allows one to combine to DNA of a Walfas character to make a mash-up version of two characters like here. Though there are quite a few used in a joking manner, or even made manually. These were big for awhile, but died down quite a bit over time.
