History

The Hard Times was founded by Matt Saincome (Founder, Editor-in-chief), Bill Conway (Co-Founder, Managing Editor, Head Writer), and Ed Saincome (Co-Founder, Hard Style Managing Editor).[1] The domain was registered on November 10th, 2014,[2] and the site published its first article, "Bandmates Confused After Straight Edge Singer Brings Podium to First Practice,"[3] on November 11th.

Website

In the following two years, The Hard Times website expanded to include two satirical blogs: Hard Style,[4] a lifestyle blog, and Gut Check,[5] devoted to sports like MMA and skating. The website also hosts Edgeland,[6] a podcast dubbed "The most straight edge podcast on the internet." After some growth, The Hard Times began putting on live punk rock shows.[7]

Reception

The Hard Times is generally well received. Shortly after its launch, BrooklynVegan[8] covered the site, calling it "an Onion-like site for punk fans." In April of 2015, Deadspin[9] ran a positive profile of the site and Saincome. There, Saincome identified the site's January 14th, 2015 article, "Deafheaven Bassist Falls Asleep Onstage,"[10] as the moment Hard Times first went viral. The article has gained over 37,800 shares as of January 25th, 2017.
