About

Stop Clickbait is an Internet organization that aims to summarize and re-share clickbait articles with intentionally vague, manipulative or attention grabbing headlines.

History

Launched on May 4th, 2016, the Stop Clickbait organization describes themselves as a network of 22 pages broken down into categories.[1] Each page shares articles and posts that are guilty of clickbait. However, the group summarizes the article, spoiling what the website's bait. Posts that are spoiled are tagged using the hashtag "StopClickBait" (examples below).

On May 16th, Imgur beepbeepmeow posted a dumb of articles that have been marked by the organization. Within two years, the post has received more than 17,000 points and 225,000 views.

The following month, on June 7th, the official Stop Clickbait Twitter account launched.

Features

Stop Clickbait's operates on social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. The main Facebook page breaks the articles down into various categories (shown below). Each post, which has originally been written by various sites guilty of sharing clickbait, is re-written to spoil what the headline promises by one of the more than 100 volunteers that works with Stop Clickbait. These volunteers have covered and re-shared articles in 13 languages as of August 2018.

Additionally, the group does not remove the original link to the clickbait article or video. Instead, they include the original link so that the website does not lose traffic or ad-revenue. According the group, their goal is only to point out clickbait and provide users with a more accurate description of what they are clicking on.

Highlights

As of August 2018, the website claims that they have received more than 200 million impressions.[2] Additionally, their Facebook page has 195,000 likes and 199,000 follows, while their Twitter[3] account has more than 3,400 followers.
