@Steak-umm is the official social media accounts for the Steak-umm brand frozen meat product. The account earned a reputation for earnest posts about social media and media literacy, as well as using memes. The accounts are run by internet culture writer Nathan Allebach.

History

On September 29th, 2009, Twitter[1] user @steak_umm posted its first tweet. They wrote, "Steak-umm Steaks can anchor any beefy meal, from breakfast burritos to shepherd’s pie, American chop suey, sloppy joes and stroganoffs" (shown below).

On August 29th, 2017, @Steak-umm posted its first meme. In this case, they tweeted[2] a Distracted Boyfriend meme (shown below, left).

Months later, on January 15th, 2018, @Steak-umm concluded a campaign to verify the account. They tweeted,[3] "OPERATION #VERIFYSTEAKUMM WAS A SUCCESS YOU SAVAGES THE CORRUPT @TWITTER BUREAUCRATS FINALLY BENT TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE STEAK-UMM BLESS THIS DAY." The tweet received more than 1,400 likes and 345 retweets in less than three years (shown below, center).

Over the next year, the account continued to post various images and content related to meme culture. For example, on June 5th, 2018, the account tweeted[4] a screenshot of a 4chan post featuring an image Joe Rogan parodying the podcast host talking about Steak-umms. The post received more than 2,100 likes and 515 retweets in less than two months (shown below, right).

On December 9th, 2019, Steak-umm posted their first video on their TikTok account. The post received more than 3,100 views and 340 likes in less than one year (shown below, left).

On March 2nd, 2020, the account posted a TikTok video that received more than 520,000 views, 79,000 likes and 685 comments in less than two months. The video is their most popular as of April 2020.

Social Media Commentary

On September 26th, 2018, the account went viral with a post about why young people respond positively to brands on social media. In the initial tweet, they wrote, "why are so many young people flocking to brands on social media for love, guidance, and attention? I'll tell you why. they're isolated from real communities, working service jobs they hate while barely making ends meat, and are living w/ unchecked personal/mental health problems." This post received more than 46,000 likes and 11,000 retweets in less than two years (thread shown below).

Coronavirus Tweets

On April 2nd, 2020, @steak_umm posted[5] the first of two viral tweets during the coronavirus outbreak. In the first tweet, they wrote, "here are some thoughts on how we can come together amidst this pandemic and economic crisis, despite the challenges of misinformation, media inundation, partisanship, and cultural polarization." This initial tweet received more than 6,000 likes and 2,100 retweets in less than one week (thread shown below).


On April 6th, the account posted[6] a thread about media literacy and misinformation. In the initial tweet, they wrote, "friendly reminder in times of uncertainty and misinformation: anecdotes are not data. (good) data is carefully measured and collected information based on a range of subject-dependent factors, including, but not limited to, controlled variables, meta-analysis, and randomization." The tweet received more than 57,000 likes and 15,000 retweets in less than two days (thread shown below).
